Germany, the land of poets and philosophers, can boast of a rich treasure of texts which have been set to music. Marvelous songs have been created which have survived for hundreds of years. And in the popular music of the younger generation, German-language songs are playing an ever larger role.
The TONUS DUO interprets a selection of these songs in a very individual way on its newly released debut album: D. The absence of words focuses concentration on the musical quality of the melodies. This is not just an example of using these titles for musical experiments, since the listener, through previous knowledge, links to an abundance of pictures, feelings, moods and stories that the songs bring with them.
Bass player Felix Behrendt and pianist Daniel Stickan value this aspect of their interpretations very highly. The TONUS DUO has found a way to make melodies which are sometimes centuries-old sound fresh and current. They have added harmonious shades to them which open up a path toward a surprisingly new perception of the pieces for the listener. Thus a kind of music develops and unfolds on the fertile soil of the personal relationship between listeners and song that has a calm strength. And it invites us to go on an exciting journey between recognition and discovery.
